The OLD COVENANT and the NEW COVENANT RATIFIED
The once-only ratification ceremony, using blood and water, was the very first ceremony of the Old Covenant. It took place well before any dedication or ministration of the tabernacle, for the tabernacle had yet to be constructed.
How did Jesus fulfil the type in Exodus 24? At the crucifixion, Jesus became the one and only sacrifice of the New Covenant. After Jesus had died, "...a soldier thrust a spear into the Saviour’s side. From the wound thus made, there flowed two copious and distinct streams, one of blood, the other of water. This was noted by all the beholders, and John states the occurrence very definitely." (DA 771.4)
The spear wound did not cause the death of Jesus, for He was already dead. Yet it is so significant that it is the glory of Christ. Habakkuk the prophet, when beholding Christ in His glory wrote: “He had bright beams coming out of His side: and there was the hiding of His power.” Habakkuk 3:4, (Margin) That pierced side whence flowed the crimson stream that reconciled man to God—there is the Saviour’s glory, there “the hiding of His power.”
The Two Covenants
The OLD Covenant was ratified by the blood of an animal, but the NEW Covenant was ratified by the blood of Christ. When Moses ratified the Old Covenant, the blood and water were sprinkled upon the “book of the covenant”. This book of the covenant contained “the judgments which God would have them observe and the promises on condition that they would obey him.” (1SP 240.1) What Law does God wish us to observe in the New Covenant?
“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel… I will put My law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts.” Jeremiah 31:31-33.
The New Covenant is based upon the same Law that God calls His, and that He proclaimed from Mt. Sinai, the Ten Commandments.
Was the blood of the New Covenant sacrifice sprinkled over the Law of the New Covenant? This is exactly what Ron Wyatt reported to have found in the cave chamber beneath the Calvary escarpment. Upon the lid of the earthly Ark of the Covenant, the mercy seat, is the physical evidence of the ratification of the New Covenant, the remnant of the “crimson stream”, the blood and water, which had flowed from the pierced side of our Saviour on the day of the crucifixion.
Did the blood of Christ landing upon the Ark of the Covenant fulfill the Law being sprinkled? Yes, Inspration says "The ark was merely a receptacle for the tables of the law, and the presence of these divine precepts gave to it its value and sacredness" (See GC 433.2). To fulfill the type given in Exodus 24, the Law of God had to be included in the ratification of the New Covenant, in the same way that Moses sprinkled the “book of the covenant..”
The fact that God’s Law was included in the ratifying of the Covenant shows it is part of this New Covenant, and is an unanswerable proof that the Sabbath is still applicable to New Covenant Christians.
Three and a half thousand years ago, God descended upon Mt. Sinai in fire and smoke, and proclaimed His Law to the Hebrews. God then formed a covenant between Himself and His people, which is known as the Old Covenant. From Hebrews we learn that both BLOOD and WATER were used for this ceremony. “For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.” Hebrews 9:19-20 This ceremony was the ratification of the covenant. According to the dictionary, ratification means, “To approve, to confirm – especially to give formal sanction to, to ratify an agreement or treaty, to confirm (validate by formal assent) sanction (to act as a recognised authority confirming or ratify an action), authorize, to make valid usually by authoritative approval.” |
